This post does not take into account any major events that could happen in the next few years, such as if someone significant dies or an unexpected child becomes famous.
The first major trend is a move towards names that are less common but have history and meaning to them.
You can see this from data which has shown a sharp drop for some uncommon Filipino boy’s names such as “Dylan” and “Tristan.” There is also a movement similar to America where people want their childrens’ initials match with theirs (e.g., JBD). Names with popular initials like DMD would be more appealing now then they were before because of how much our culture revolves around social media nowadays! This may account for the increase in popularity for these rarer, historical names: “Jose” and “Juan.” ~~ Finally, there is a trend in Filipino culture that names are more often associated with the family or clan than just the individual. For example, it’s not uncommon for Filipinos to have different last names between their mother and father (e.g., Garcia-Montejo). This can also be seen in Filipino naming conventions where people will refer to others by given name + surname e.g., Maria Teresa de la Cruz would now most likely go by Maria Teresa Montejo instead of de la Cruz because she married into her husband’s family!
In general we want our childrens’ names to represent who they are as individuals but at the same time show ties back to their family and culture. In the Filipino community, there is a great reverence for our ancestors so this means that parents will often name themselves or their children after a grandparent who has passed away.
In my opinion, these are stronger ties than just naming your child after yourself or someone in your family because they share the same last name as you do
I think it creates more of an identity crisis! It’s not uncommon to have different last names between grandparents, even if they’re both from one generation; which can create confusion when referencing them with each other. For instance: “Grandma” Dolores de la Cruz married her second husband Rafael Montejo but she might still go by ‘Dolores de la Cruz’ or ‘Dolores Montejo’.
So, in my opinion, the Filipino tradition of naming children after their grandparents is a really great choice not just because it honors our ancestors but also because it creates these strong family ties which are so important to us.
I would hope that this continues into 2022 and beyond! It’s such an awesome way to hold on to culture by giving your child a name with meaning! And who knows? Maybe they’ll be named after you too ;)
