This recipe is from my husband’s parents for a favorite holiday recipe he grew up with. They have a restaurant in the same town where our family used to live so they were always making this for that family. This was one of their favorite dishes to make and our family was always asking for leftovers. I decided to make a version for the first time that was a little different from the recipe they were using.
This is my family’s version of a tempura that is a little different than the one we grew up with. Instead of the usual tempura sauce, I used a little bit of fish sauce (it’s pretty cheap these days) and a little bit of onion, garlic, and black pepper to give the dish a new twist.
I think this is the kind of dish a lot of people would love to eat. It sounds fun, it tastes good, and it’s very affordable. If you like fish, I bet you would love this. My family and I will eat this for dinner at least once a week.

What I was trying to get at with this dish is that the main ingredient is the food itself. You can have a fish meal, but if you don’t use the fish, you could eat the same dish as a tuna or something. It’s that simple. No fancy ingredients needed.
You can get all kinds of fancy food in Japan, but for the most part, you get the basics. There’s also a ton of different options for tempura. I had a lot of fun eating tempura at a restaurant in Japan and it was a great way to spend a few hours.
Tempura is a dish that was created by combining a fish and a bit of oil. But a lot of times, we get it served up as a garnish, and that’s what I was trying to get at here. That’s the reason that tempura doesn’t have that much of a following in the West. The main reason for that is because even though it’s a relatively easy thing to do, it can be quite tricky and requires a lot of skill.
The trick is to cook the tempura the right way. Most tempura restaurants will only serve it right after they have made the sauce. They add the tempura to the sauce and then mix it up. When you put it in the pan, it really needs to cook at the highest setting and be done in about 15 to 20 minutes. After you put it in the pan, you really need to keep the tempura in the pan and not move it.
The tempura recipe for me is to take a small piece of potato, a few spoons of sesame oil, some minced garlic, and a teaspoon of sugar. Put it on top of the rice according to the recipe, and put it in the microwave for about 2 minutes. The potatoes will start to cook and will continue to cook until it is nice and brown, and then turn onto the rice. You can then use a wooden spoon to take out every bit of excess oil.
If you do want the tempura to remain in the pan, the proper technique is to use a food thermometer to test for doneness. Also, be sure to remove it from the microwave before it begins to cook (if it is not done in 2 minutes, you may have to cook it longer).
