I’m a food intolerant. This isn’t news to most of you. I remember the first time I ate something I had no interest in. It was as if someone had suddenly given me a can of tuna fish and said “Eat it. You’ll like it.” I was in college so I was in my own little world. I ate the most disgusting, inedible things.
You may not think so, but it’s actually quite common. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has an annual survey of food intolerance that you can read about here. The National Institute of Food and Nutrition (NIFN) also conducts surveys to determine what we eat and how to prevent food allergies and intolerances. Even the Mayo Clinic has an allergy testing program called the “Food Allergy Test” that you can read about here.
It’s not uncommon for people to have a food allergy or intolerance, but many people have more than one. A person may not know that they have a food allergy or intolerance until a doctor or nurse notices some of the symptoms associated with the food. A reaction to a given food is one of the many things that they look for when they test a person for a food allergy or intolerance.
The Food Allergy Test is a simple test. The person answers a series of questions about their food allergies and intolerances. They are then sent to a room that has a table with several food samples on it. They are asked to bite into one of the samples and see if the person is allergic to it or intolerant to it. If they are, a sample is put on a tray and sent to a doctor’s assistant for testing.
It’s a great test because it can be a little bit more thorough, but it still does not tell you the person’s food allergies. If you ask for food allergies, they are told to “be careful” because they won’t put the sample on a tray. This is a problem for our health, so we’re not really sure if they are allergic to any food.

It can be severe, such as life-threatening reactions to food, but it can also be a mild reaction that can be tolerable.
