My first experience with Mexican food was at a restaurant in San Diego. I had never had Mexican food before, so I was immediately attracted to the food. The first thing that I noticed was the spicy salsa and the tortilla chips, the next thing I noticed was the salsa that was on the side. The tortilla chips were huge, so I ordered two.
I haven’t been to a Mexican restaurant in ages and the idea of having a small plate of tacos, not knowing what I’m going to get, is a little intimidating. So what is the mexican spice? The spice from these indigenous cacti that it comes from is called mezcal. They grow in Mexico and they are quite similar to our spice.
Yes, it’s mezcal and the indigenous pepper plant that is used in cooking. We don’t use any indigenous pepper plants in our own cooking, though I would imagine any non-Mexican spice we use to cook wouldn’t be native to Mexico. Mexican spices are made using the Mexican pepper plant and are usually only available in Mexico, Puerto Rico, or California.
