I think we all have a weird kind of “self-awareness” that’s at least partly based on amoeba. Amoeba are single-celled microscopic organisms that live inside human cells. They are related to the family of protozoa, but they are much more than that. These organisms have been around for approximately 200 million years.
Amoeba are incredibly good at getting food. One of their most common ways of obtaining food is making tiny amoeba cells into soup by wrapping the amoeba around a piece of food. When food is placed in the amoeba it will start forming amoeba-like cells which will then begin to make more amoeba cells. The process is often performed by attaching the amoeba to the tip of a glass or metal straw.
Amoeba are one of the few organisms that can survive in complete darkness. As long as there’s a source of light, it will be possible to harvest food from amoebas by shining a light on them. You can see this in the above video where the amoeba are being shone on by a flashlight.
You can also use amoebas to produce oxygen, but without any water and electricity, the process isn’t too useful.
All the amoebas we know of are quite large, between 1 and 10 cm long. The ones we see in nature are usually smaller, between 1 and 10 microns, and live in aquatic habitats. The one we saw in the video is also quite large, around 5 micron.
The only way to obtain food from these amoebas, and possibly even have enough food for a human being, is by shining a light on them. You can actually see this in the video by shining the light on the amoeba, and the creature opens its mouth to the light.
It’s not just what we can see. We can also see what this amoeba is eating by shining a light on it. The amoeba will open its mouth to the light, and then eat.
It is a very common occurrence, and the only way to know if it’s true is to see it yourself. If you can see an amoeba consuming a food source, it’s probably true. It’s not actually a good idea to shine a light on them just for the sake of testing it since their eyesight is poor.
