Those people are often known as “local” and most of them are very proud of that.
The truth is, the majority of these folks are not union members. They are “independent business owners”. You will often see them outside the union hall while the union is in session. They are mostly working for small businesses but they are not forced to join the union.
These are the same people that work in office buildings. Some of them are union members and some are not. They are the ones that are often considered as “regular” union members. The truth is, most of these folks are not union members. They are independent business owners and they are often working for businesses that are not unionized.
