Self-affirmation is basically just a way of saying to ourselves, “I have some control over my actions.” But the problem is that we don’t actually have any control over our actions. We don’t have any power over our thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
Self-affirmation is especially hard to achieve in times when we feel powerless. But, as the saying goes, we become what we think about. That is, if you think of all the things you can do to make yourself feel better, you might not be able to accomplish any of them. But if you think of all the things you can do to make yourself feel bad, you might be able to accomplish the things you dont want to do.
I’ve heard this saying so many times over the years: “You are what you think.” “All you need is one good thought”, “You are what you think of yourself.” If you think of yourself as good, you have the power to start your day with a good thought. If you want to feel good about yourself, you have to think of yourself as bad.
Well, at first glance you might think that if you think of yourself as bad, you can’t think of yourself as good. But that’s wrong. How can you feel good about yourself if you think of yourself as bad? There are two ways you can accomplish this: You can make yourself think of yourself as bad, or you can do the opposite.
Your first step is to make a conscious decision to think of yourself as bad. This is called being “aware of your own feelings.” We are all aware of our own feelings. There is just something that holds us back from thinking of ourselves as bad. It is the very act of thinking of ourselves as bad that allows us to actually experience our feelings.
To be aware of our feelings, we need to remember them. We need to recall them. We need to relive them. We need to talk to someone. We need to write them down. We need to tell someone. We need to hear them. All of these things help us to keep our feelings alive and help us to remember them.
The problem is the act of thinking of ourselves as bad and the act of reliving our feelings. Think about it. It’s like we need to have a certain amount of money or we need to be very close to someone, or we need to be on a certain diet. These things hold us back from having these experiences, but all of these things require us to consciously remember and relive them.
